2. You don't just need to know the nine cards in your hand. Because of the draft mechanism, a player must know how each card functions on its own AND how it might chain with already drafted cards AND how passing the wrong cards might benefit an opponent. That reinforces the need to know all the cards well.

This is true if you want to have the best possible chance of winning. It goes for most complex card games. However, like with all those games, this is not necessary to have fun with the game and certainly not for a first play.

Your logic can be applied to all first plays: Don't try to do well.

If true, then just choose random cards and don't even try a winnable strategy.

But where's the learning in that?

I think I'm starting to see why your game took 2 hours 45 minutes.

doesn't the lantern say 'in your reserve' therefore only includes the 7 (max) crystals that your reserve can hold?

How does passing on the damned soul of Onys card work?

Does the player to your left have to have a 'open' star(summon gauge) to be able to pass it on?

Can you pass it on in other peoples turns?
Or only in your own?

We are a bit confused as it was played on turn one of a game last night and we played that you have to have a star to pass it on which made it VERY difficult to get rid of.

Key wording on the card, from the rules:

At any point during their turn, the player who owns the Damned Soul of Onys can choose to give it to the player to their left by discarding a water energy. The Damned Soul of Onys therefore changes owners. The Damned Soul of Onys can change owners multiple times in a given round.

I think the answer is in boldface above, which to me supersedes the number of summons openings in another player's tableau. How this card plays is up to the owner. In other words, this card can be passed around with no restrictions other than those printed on the card.

All rules on this card:

When you summon the Damned Soul of Onys, move your sorcerer token ten spaces forward on the crystal track and receive one water energy from the stockpile. Place this energy in your reserve.

Only the player who summons the Damned Soul of Onys gets ten crystals and one water energy.

At any point during their turn, the player who owns the Damned Soul
of Onys can choose to give it to the player to their left by discarding a water energy. The Damned Soul of Onys therefore changes owners. The
Damned Soul of Onys can change owners multiple times in a given round.

At the end of the round, if a player owns the Damned Soul of Onys, that player loses three crystals.

The Damned Soul of Onys has negative prestige points.

The turn answer is in the boldfaced phrase. Only the owner can pass it, and only on his/her turn. It can change hands multiple times in a round because the card moves left, as does the turn.

The summons answer is underlined above, which to me supersedes the number of summons openings in another player's tableau. How this card plays is up to the owner. In other words, this card can be passed around with no restrictions other than those printed on the card.

I guess the question that remains is whether a player with an open summoning spot must consider it filled by this card if passed by another player.

I would tend to play it as if it does, which adds more screwage.

That said, if consistency matters and it's not being counted as summoned if it is passed to a player with all summoning spots filled, then perhaps it should be treated as an inconsequential ghost card that never fills a summoning spot. If you want to go by definition, it wasn't truly summoned by the person who receives it. It sort of "just shows up."

Damned soul of Onys can choose to give it to the player to their left by discarding a water energy

so essentially this card could read -3 crystals (at end of turn)to the player with the least water crystals?

To pass the card on your turn, you need to discard one water energy.

But notice the wording on the rule:

At the end of the round, if a player owns the Damned Soul of Onys, that player loses three crystals.

The end of the round, not the turn, is when the player stuck with the card loses three crystals.

Really doesn't pay to be the last player in the round and get stuck with this hot potato, now does it?

Was the question regarding an open summoning spot addressed? I didn't see an answer. I would assume it works in reverse of the card that reduces the summoning gauge. Where if your gauge goes below the number of summoned cards, you are just unable to summon until it surpasses the number of cards.

I am fairly certain it was clarified somewhere in the rules that if you have more cards in play than your stars allow, you just have to earn more stars until you can play more; there is no penalty or discard for exceeding your star number via card abilities.

Jack and Adam are both correct. The summoning gauge is only referenced when you are summoning, not when someone is passing you a Damned Soul. And yes, the Damned Soul definitely counts towards your summoning gauge. So you may need to increase it or get rid of Onys in order to summon.

Not exactly, since there are a few other complications that mean that a player may not want to pass the Onys, even if he has the water energy. He could need the water energy for something else, or the water may itself be worth more than 3 crystals used in some other way (transmuting with Io's Purse for example). Additionally, the Idol of the Familiar and the Thieving Fairies also add some considerations to how it will all play out.

You're right. If you look closely at the rules, the card printed does say that it increases the summoning gauge. Thanks.

I numbered these for clarity.

You're confusing things by not stating who "you" is. The way you have worded this makes 1 and 2 sound contradictory.

If the player in 2 is the person who was passed the card by the summoner of it in 1, then according to 1, this should not affect the summoning gauge of the person who was passed the card.

your reserve can hold up to 10 energies when you have a spell book.
2 purses of io make the transmutation +2 with the balance
2 purses of io and 3 transmutations bonuses in a row give you +5 per energies... the balance transmutes at 32 points ( official rules).
